Ultrasound Treatment for Clogged Milk Ducts
Breastfeeding is a natural and rewarding experience for many mothers, but it can also come with challenges. One common issue is clogged milk ducts, which can cause discomfort and affect milk flow. At Ova Women’s Health Physiotherapy, we offer Therapeutic Ultrasound as an effective treatment for this condition, helping mothers continue their breastfeeding journey with ease.
What is a Clogged Milk Duct?
Clogged milk ducts occur when the flow of milk is obstructed, often leading
to a hard lump in the breast, localized pain, and sometimes inflammation.
If not addressed, clogged ducts can progress to mastitis, a painful infection
that may require medical treatment.
How Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Work?
Therapeutic ultrasound is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-frequency sound waves to penetrate deep into the breast tissue. This technique offers several benefits for treating clogged milk ducts:
Promotes Milk Flow: The sound waves generate gentle heat and micro-vibrations within the tissue, helping to break down the blockage and improve milk flow. This can quickly alleviate the discomfort associated with clogged ducts.
Reduces Inflammation: The heat produced by the ultrasound waves helps to reduce inflammation and swelling around the clogged duct, providing relief from pain and tenderness.
Enhances Healing: By increasing blood flow to the affected area, therapeutic ultrasound supports the body's natural healing processes. Improved circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, promoting faster recovery.
Non-Invasive and Safe: Therapeutic ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive treatment option with minimal risk. It is a comfortable procedure that can be performed quickly in our clinic, allowing you to resume your daily activities immediately.
What to Expect During Treatment
During a therapeutic ultrasound session, one of our highly trained and qualified physiotherapists will begin by applying a specialized gel to the affected area of your breast. This gel is essential as it enhances the effectiveness of the ultrasound waves. Using a small handheld device, the therapist will gently move it over the clogged duct, delivering targeted ultrasound energy directly to the blockage.
The entire procedure is designed to be comfortable and typically lasts about 60 minutes. To maximize the benefits, mothers are encouraged to empty their breasts immediately after the session, either by breastfeeding their babies or using a breast pump. This helps to ensure that the ducts remain clear and that milk flow is restored.
Most mothers report significant relief after just one or two sessions, making therapeutic ultrasound a highly effective and efficient treatment for clogged milk ducts. Our goal is to provide you with prompt relief and support you in your breastfeeding journey with minimal discomfort.
Considering that clogged milk ducts can be an urgent and unexpected issue, if you are unable to find an available appointment in our schedule, please contact us immediately at (Info@ovawomenshealthphysio.com) to book an emergency session outside of regular hours. Important Details to Prepare for Your Appointment
To achieve the best results, it is important for moms to fully empty both breasts after the treatment. Bringing a breast pump is recommended for this purpose. Alternatively, moms are welcome to bring their baby to breastfeed directly following the session.
Please note that if you have Breast Implants, we require a letter from your doctor or surgeon confirming that it is safe to proceed with treatment.
